EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR and its specialized variant, Attachment-Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR), are evidence-based therapies effective in reducing or eliminating symptoms associated with trauma, including flashbacks, emotional flooding, somatic sensations, dissociation and panic. EMDR allows clients to revisit challenging feelings, thoughts, and beliefs with less distress and activation.

This is achieved by leveraging the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections (neuroplasticity) and to restore adaptive neural pathways. Using bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, EMDR stimulates brain areas involved in memory and emotion while taxing working memory and executive functions to facilitate reprocessing of traumatic memories, decreasing the brain’s hyperactive response. This restores the brain’s ability to rewire maladaptive patterns, improving executive functioning and alleviating difficult emotional states.
AF-EMDR distinctly targets early childhood relational traumas from caregiver disruptions and negative events, healing insecure attachment styles and relational trauma by integrating attachment theory.
